STORE MIX 100 ARCHIVE: JONNY NASH

SCOTTISH MUSICIAN AND PRODUCER, JONNY NASH PUSHES MUSICAL BOUNDARIES, EXPLORING CAPTIVATING SOUNDS THAT TRANSCEND TRADITIONAL GENRES WHILE EFFORTLESSLY KEEPING IN TUNE WITH WHATEVER MELODY COMES HIS WAY.

It’s been over 10 years since Jonny Nash produced his first mix for LN-CC. A part of the original LN-CC crew, he played a pivotal role in forming LN-CC’s in-house record label and buying music for the store, closely collaborating with Dan Mitchell, one of LN-CC’s founders. So, of course, it was only right to enlist Jonny to mix an exclusive 60-minute set as part of Dan’s curated line-up of talented DJs for LN-CC’s 100th Store Mix. His ambient production comprises music released in recent years, evoking the delicate and atmospheric sounds that originally filled the store when it first opened. To mark the occasion, LN-CC unveils two limited edition T-shirts in collaboration with Space Available and a tote bag, each stamped with the names of the featured DJs.

“The mix brings back a lot of memories! I was part of the original LN-CC crew, and ten years on, listening to it makes me proud of what we achieved with the store and the online shop. The mix series was my baby and at that time, no stores were making this kind of content. We were ahead of our time!”

Born and raised in Scotland, Jonny Nash moved to Japan in the early 2000s. He seamlessly integrated into Japan’s dynamic and vibrant scene of experimental DJs and producers including DJ and digger-extraordinaire Chee Shimizu, who invited Jonny into the “Discossession” collective, a small circle of DJs who ran an influential party in Tokyo.

Soaking up the knowledge and insights of his peers, Jonny deepened his understanding of more obscure realms within disco and house music during his free time in Japanese record stores, drawing inspiration from the fringes of genres like Progressive Rock, New Age, Jazz and Ambient music. He would experiment with these new discoveries on the high-end sound system of Hachioji Shelter, at Shimizu’s “Sci-fi”, an event that still runs to this day. This immersion in music led Jonny from record collecting and DJing to crafting his own music and releasing his first record in 2008.

“My fantasy celebration would have to be in the LN-CC store…we did a lot of ‘listening sessions’ in there – I’d probably invite Chee Shimizu as we had him play in the store a few times back in the day, and it was always amazing!”

In 2016, Jonny moved to Amsterdam, establishing his own label, Melody As Truth. His series of solo records alongside collaborations with like-minded musician and studio partner Suzanne Kraft cemented Jonny’s melodic ambient sound. Combining elements of washed-out guitar textures, e-bow and electronics, Jonny has emerged as one of the key artists in the burgeoning wave of ambient music.
