Rigards is an emerging eyewear brand that hand crafts its frames from natural horn. The name, Rigards is adapted from the French word 'regard', to look or glance. The brand is the realisation of a mission to rediscover the hidden appeal of horn frames, re-imagined through small, numbered editions. With an emphasis on handmade craftsmanship, all materials are honest and hard wearing. The designs are original and nonconformist; inspired by vintage silhouettes each pair is handcrafted with time-honoured methods of production and finished with signature treatments, combining past techniques with modern sensibility. The horns used for Rigards frames are an organic by-product of water buffalo rearing on small farms in Africa. Each is handpicked for its colour, grain and thickness and each piece is meticulously paired with a design that accentuates its traits.
Working away from conventional seasons, Rigards is able to develop a range of styles, finishes and treatments that allow the brand to evolve organically. Offering two signature finishes that are unique to the brand, both ‘Sanjuro’ and ‘Relique’ offer interesting finishes that allow the fabrication and design to be realised. Sanjuro is a surface treatment that is hand finished offering both roughness and refinement, a nod to the Japanese ‘Shibusa’ aesthetic. Allowing for a matte finish, no two frames appear the same. ’Relique’ utilises a copper-like finish in which heat is used to alter the look and shadows of the horn frames, hand polished without wax allows for a matter and burnished finish adding an air of rare antiquity.
