In 2002 one of the most influential collaborative relationships was born between renowned Japanese fashion designer, Yohji Yamamoto and authentic sportswear brand, adidas. Y-3 fuses luxury sportswear with luxe detailing and simplified design. The ‘Y’ stands for Yohji Yamamoto, the ‘3’ represents adidas’ three signature stripes and ‘the’ signifies the bond between the two. The brand experiments with advanced fabrics and explores structure and silhouettes with the active individual in mind. Y-3 sneakers are constructed from rich, soft leathers, feature innovative soles and flashes of bold and contemporary prints. The unique partnership has resulted in a line that pushes modern design whilst maintaining the essence of classic sportswear.
Inspired by the Royal Air Force, the Y-3 AW15 collection featured recognisable silhouettes that ignited aviation and strong military themes. Flight suits, soviet officer jackets and greatcoats were brought together by the Y-3 three stripes that adorned leggings, pants and casual wear. Jackets were decorated with straps and buckles whilst combat trousers featured oversized pockets and abstract camo prints. Colour palettes remained traditional in navy, black and blue with accents of white, grey and green – which are a strong contrast to the past two season’s florescent hues. Layering, dropped crotch and sporty pieces offer a contemporary approach to sportswear that the label champions, whilst cocooning silhouettes and contrasting materials allow for a new direction. The collection also featured an impressive new range of sneakers, featuring recognisable Boost, Qasa High and Kohna silhouettes, reimagined in the season’s aesthetic in canvas, neoprene and leather.
