Brand history

The history of E.Tautz dates back to 1867, when tailor Edward Tautz first opened his first shop in the thriving West End of London. The label was successfully re-launched in 2009 by creative director Patrick Grant at the helm of the brand, re-inventing the label to high fashion status with Savile Row tailoring at its heart. With a contemporary designer’s vision combined with the rich heritage in sporting and military traditions that have always underpinned the brand, the aesthetic of each season is always worked alongside the story of E.Tautz, articulated as ‘A Wardrobe for a Life Less Ordinary.’

Titled ‘Abstract Optimism,’ the SS16 collection from E.Tautz is inspired by The Festival of Britain and London South Bank’s ‘The Skylon,’a short-lived landmark that stood as a beacon of optimism for the future following the austerity of World War Two. This 1950s optimism translates in Patrick Grant’s collection with mechanical fastenings, utilitarian housecoats and chemically-dyed fabrics. Abstract Kandinsky-style prints in soft primary colours feature on short sleeved poplin shirts, Mondrian-esque motifs on fine knit sweaters and Brutalist graphics on tailored shorts. The youthful energy embodied by teenagers who symbolised postwar optimism is presented in the collection’s bold colour palette; reds, greens, yellows and pinks whilst their faded hues mimic the economic downturn and social hardship of the time. Rooted in British history, this season’s offering includes signature oversized jeans, boxy sports shorts and lightweight parkas that exude a sense of modernism.
