Yohji Yamamoto - Talking to Myself
Yohji Yamamoto: Talking to myself
-Steidl & Carla Sozzani, 2002
-Hardcover with cardboard sleeve
This is the first book Yohji Yamamoto was personally involved in at every stage, within it Yamamoto gives the reader a sincere and genuine insight into his own private world. Talking to Myself is a creative and illustrated notebook recounting the phases in the life of a man, his approach and that of his team. The book is punctuated with images by Nick Knight, Peter Lindbergh, Craig McDean, Sheila Metzner, Sarah Moon, Paolo Roversi, David Sims, Max Vadukul, Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin and others. By "talking to himself", and with philosopher Kiyokazu Washida about himself and the objects he creates, Yamamoto, the demanding author and sometimes poet strives to emphasise a certain conception of clothing at the dawn of the third millennium. Talking to Myself deciphers this desire to achieve anti-fashion through fashion itself in pages marked with Japanese ideograms, striking sketches and abstract compositions derived from an age-old tradition, as Yohji Yamamoto's pen or brush trace their lines on white paper. In this world of black and white symbols, colour makes only a fleeting appearance. The book itself is obviously the result of Yamamoto's keen eye, two cloth covered books are housed in a white cardboard box demonstrating that no detail has been forgotten.
