“It’s about trying to use technology in a modern way and finding craftsmanship within that,” Matthew Williams told LN-CC as the inkjet printers whirred through the 6 MONCLER 1017 ALYX 9SM presentation during the Moncler Genius launch event earlier this year, what feels like a lifetime ago now. In the subsequent months, despite the global coronavirus pandemic forcing life as we know it to pause, the Chicago-born, California-raised creative director has been busy. While many of us have barely left our sofas this year, 2020 has seen 1017 ALYX 9SM close the last physical men’s fashion week and seen Williams appointed as Givenchy’s new creative director and share his debut collection.
From the moment the Milan-based outerwear specialist Moncler first unveiled 1017 ALYX 9SM as part of its Genius project – an explosion of creative energy that invites the industry’s most exciting designers to reimagine its iconic down-filled outerwear – back in 2019, Williams has described the collaboration as “a marriage”. This fusion of worlds sees 1017 ALYX 9SM’s defining cuts, taped tailoring, laser-cut details, seamless sonic bonding and concise colour palette meet Moncler’s outdoors spirit. It’s a partnership centred on technical innovation and responsible fabrication.
“Mr. Ruffini's [Chairman and CEO of Moncler] move with Moncler Genius is genius,” Christopher Morency, Highnobiety’s editorial director, explains over email on the eve of its latest launch. “Letting leading creatives that already have momentum behind them come into Moncler to remix its house codes while adding their own signatures is a smart move.” Moncler's ongoing partnership with Alyx is one of Morency’s personal favourites, “as it seamlessly blends the two worlds to create something that's new.”
It should come as no surprise that 6 MONCLER 1017 ALYX 9SM encapsulates everything that a successful collaboration can and should be. Williams thrives in creative coming togethers. His career began in music, working as a creative director before forming the internet-born art collective and DJ crew-turned streetwear line Been Trill – alongside Virgil Abloh, Heron Preston and Justin Saunders – before launching 1017 ALYX 9SM in 2015. Since then, he has achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success as he built a truly modern luxury house.
