“In every collection that I work on, and in every collaboration, there’s a constant tension between functionality and experimentation,” Craig Green has previously told LN-CC. His work has, and always will, delight in this tension. From his imagination igniting MA CSM graduate show in 2012 to his possibility pushing autumn/winter 21 collection and beyond, the London-born designer has become globally celebrated through the ingenuity, functionality and freedom of expression in his work. His on-going collaboration with adidas Originals reflects the same tension, none more so than this third release.
For spring/summer 21, adidas Originals and Craig Green release two new styles that are ingenious in their functionality. In both the CG ZX 2KPHORMAR and CG ZX 2K PHORMARI, the design of the upper has been pioneered by Craig and reflects his commitment to unique creativity with purpose. With a feeling of both simplicity and strength, each design detail exists to serve a function. It is about celebrating the materials in their truest form, selected and applied for their properties that serve the shoe as a whole.
Both the CG ZX 2K PHORMAR and CG ZX 2K PHORMAR II are constructed using the fewest individual pieces possible, structured using intrinsic cording details which create the shoe’s distinctive silhouette. The shoe takes inspiration from the functional simplicity of the ZX 2K Boost sole, creating a function-focused shoe that is futuristic, yet also minimal in its construction.
The CG ZX 2K PHORMAR has an upper constructed from one piece of translucent
nylon, structured by hi-density white cording that’s fed through stitched channels. With nothing to hide, this cording is visible beneath the nylon, then emerges at the heel and the top of the tongue to reveal the shoe’s inner workings. This cord tunnel detail is a signature technique in Craig’s work, the elemental manual construction providing both form and function. The resulting shoe is ergonomically engineered to the wearer’s foot. Elsewhere, the internal stretch lining is printed with the essential 3-Stripe, appearing through the translucent outer shell of the shoe like an internal ghost layer. The microfine tubular lacing is adjusted with a cord lock, while the exposed pieces of structural cord act like handles to adjust and fit the shoe to the shape of the individual foot. To finish the shoe is the ZX 2K heel, encasing the Boost with a semi-translucent heel clip and outsole.
The CG ZX 2K PHORMAR II offers an opaque counterpart of the style with the same construction, available in either matt woven nylon, or PU coated warp knit. The CG ZX 2K PHORMAR II features a metal cord stopper for adjusting the lacing, with a metallic trefoil badge on the lateral, while both styles have graphics on the tongue and Craig Green branding on the heel.
