Aries was born out of the ashes of cult London-based, globally sought after skatewear brand Silas, created by CSM-educated Sofia Prantera and graphic artist Fergus “Fergadelic” Purcell. From the moment Sofia and Fergus presented its debut collection to bewildered buyers – a unisex mix of sprinter T-shirts with graphics printed onto old Gildans, silk dresses, jewellery, and jeans – back in 2010, the London-based cult brand has defied expectations, blurred boundaries, challenged traditional conventions and proposed a high-low fashion future. More than a decade later, Sofia is still experimenting, still pushing and still collaborating. Aries x Lee Jeans fuses the London label’s subversive aesthetic with the heritage brand’s signature Americana workwear to produce a genderless capsule that reminds us that Aries knows denim.
“We love designing denim and this gave us the opportunity to show a part of the line that goes normally under the radar,” Sofia recently told British Vogue. She had fun doing it. Inspired by the Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone and Sergio Corbucci with Richard Avedon’s great American-portrait series, In The American West, pinned to her moodboard, Sofia Prantera places her playful, counter-culture filter over the quintessential American jeans brand and the result is a kaleidoscopic capsule of colliding worlds. Woven denim fabrications seen throughout the capsule epitomise the cross-contamination of cultures. While the all-over jacquard motif on the Rider jeans and matching jacket pays homage to classical and neoclassical Roman sculptures, the iconic 191 Carpenter Jeans and matching jacket are reimagined in vintage Italian weave to provide a fresh take on Lee’s signature pinstripe. From the jacquard to pinstripe to tie-dye, the swirling Aries and wiggly Lee Jeans logos mingle and one version shows the Lee font housed inside Aries’s classic architectural columns. From gods to cowboys, skaters to ranchers, art lovers to film obsessives, this capsule is for everyone.
