Soho, London. The home of counterculture and the birthplace of innumerable legends. Claire De Rouen was one such Soho icon and her eponymous bookshop on the first floor of 121-125 Charing Cross Road was an otherwise easy-to-miss stalwart for those in the know. Opening above a sex shop in 2005 with a launch party for Bruce Weber, it flew in the face of gentrification with one finger up for the old guard.
Today it is online only but still specialises in selling the best new and rare books on photography, fashion and art. Directed by former artist Lucy Kumara Moore, the bookshop remains a haven for independent, limited edition and niche publications while continuing the shops legacy with occasional events and exclusive signings.
The latest drop at LN-CC invites you to take a view from someone else’s perspective; whether that be challenging your ideas about race and identity or reimagining everyday experiences and materials. For Claire De Rouen at least, the movement has gone digital.
CLAIRE DE ROUEN - We Are One Of The Same. by Bianca Saunders
From the creative coalition of fashion designer Bianca Saunders, photographer Joshua Woods, stylist Matt Holmes and model/writer Jess Cole, comes a multi-disciplinary zine looking at the lived black experience in the US and UK. We Are One Of The Same focuses on a pair of twins and through a series of intimate portraits taken around New York, alongside Cole’s poetic annotations, it chronicles the relationship between individuality and connection. As the title suggests, the zine explores the similarities in experiences of blackness, but it is equally expressive in detailing the differences. “We are of the same fluidity, nothing is fixed forever, everything changes constantly. We are one of the same moment, yet it is only through our difference in perspective, that we can keep this moment moving forward.”- Bianca Saunders. Each copy is signed and dated by Bianca Saunders.
CLAIRE DE ROUEN -Tonight Lounge by Lorena Lohr
This hardback publication comprehensively brings together each chapter of Lorena Lohr’s ongoing series ‘Ocean Sands’. Tonight Lounge focuses its lens on small town America, as Lohr captures glimpses of everyday life on 35mm colour film and other assorted cheap cameras. The result is a patchwork of ramshackle bars, faded motels, decaying façades and forgotten residences. Lohr’s mastery in creating a narrative out of the minutiae and the normal is showcased here, in the first complete survey of the British-Canadian photographer’s still life documentation of her journeys across America for the last decade.
CLAIRE DE ROUEN - Fugues by Nicole Maria Winkler
Fugues is a study of objects, although we challenge you to recognise them. Sometimes architectural, other times fluid and organic, each image draws your attention to the beauty of objects that are comfortingly familiar yet objectively elusive. Elements repeat and imitate one another like a polyphonic canon of voices, narrating stories of domestic confinement in looped time. Featuring texts by artist Issy wood, art writer Ella Plevin, model Freja Beha Erichsen and curator Elaine Tam.
