In this interview with us, BLACKFONT talks to LN-CC about making content that brings people out of the holographic trap, as they dissect how important it is to take a more DIY approach to become entrepreneurial and how advancing technology could empower the artist to take that next step. Tell us about how BLACKFONT started? Who are the creatives behind the collective?

BLACKFONT is an open project that revolves around 2 main artists but sometimes we collaborate with others for certain projects. We’re all from the south-west and have known of each other for a while now. Somehow we all ended up in an underground bunker at a spring equinox party. We had similar ideas about block chain, Bass tones, fabrics and textures, apps, art and its misuse. We see ourselves as researchers, editors. We thought it could be an inviting opportunity to collaborate. BLACKFONT is something new for us.

Tell us about the early days; what was your vision when you set out? And have things played out how you expected?

A creative language that tells a story is the vision. This is one of the first projects that combines all the elements for us. So What's missing? The ideas around a mystery. We have to create an interesting antidote to the hypnosis, we’ve been asleep for too long, that’s why we prefer to let the art tell the story. Fashion is a literal expression mixed that with music and it can be a potent disruptor that is also a question. We like to tell a story across different mediums like dendrite cells make a unique connection, the minds like that.

Each track on the EP is diverse, and you describe the sounds as genre-less, is there a style that particularly resonates with this record and practice of production?

An important aspect of BLACKFONT is to have no shape be fluid. Everything is the story so each track talks and has it's own pathway to the unknown. Its an experiment with modifiers, Arps and oscillators, so think of a shape a sound a colour, what happens when you swap the modalities? You start hearing colours so we try and add theses as dynamics. Bass is a fundamental part of the music, how low can it go, how loud can we get it. Where are the edges, the borders, the bridge? You have to keep pushing. Science keeps on looking for the smallest particle but by the act of looking it creates more. The question we constantly ask is how far does this go?

There’s a cinematic and electronic quality to the EP, where did you find inspiration? What were your influences with this record?

We all love Delia Derbyshire and Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club, the Sonics are inspiring. Our focus is on bring back ideas, creativity, questions, curiosity, lust, hacking the program, rewrite the construct, diving deeper. Everything is oversaturated, the next part of the story will be about making content that brings people out of the holographic trap and directs them toward their own voice. The craft is missing, intuition is fundamental, we want to provoke the sleeper in all of us. So we use all the tools around us, film, fashion, astrology, history, technology, holistic telepathy and whatever else helps.

Don’t try and break into a single industry, its a waste of time the structure is not set up like that anymore. If you look at what's happening with street culture it's not about any one single idea, so why do that anymore. It’s much more fun breaking into culture. The silos have broken down and the conversation is about the willingness to experiment, create something new. Watch the next gen, they don't think in the same way, they see it all as one.

What are your thoughts on modern day, music industry?

The business of music has always been in a state of decay, today that's exposed, illuminated. Personal power and technology could empower the artist to take that next step. It's important that we all take a more arts and craft DIY approach become entrepreneurial. Art, society and technology are one, we can’t do one with out the other today. Remuneration, transparency, and having an system that is artist-centric should be the main focus now. With the tech available we can now create new ways to connect and forge the right relationships with the audience the people who matter.

What’s next for BLACKFONT?

We have a new Ep and a few surprises coming. That’s all we want to say about it for now, the mystery is more fun. Warhol said the best business is art.
