After his must-listen We Out Here performance that teased new music, the LA-based pianist, record producer and composer dropped by the LN-CC studio to take us all on a sonic journey. Press play and float away.
With new music on the way and fresh from one of the standout performances from We Out Here, our favourite LA-based champion of “French cat burglar music” popped into our Dalson studio to be shot in his pick of new season products and to take over our speakers with a 60-minute sonic journey of a Store Mix.
Could you introduce us to you and your world? Who is John Carroll Kirby, why do you do what you do and, for the uninitiated, what does French cat burglar music sound like?
I'm a musician from LA. Music is an upward spiral of getting joy from seeing others feel joy :) French cat burglar music is what you listen to when you're doing something illegal but your outfit is perfect.
From Frank Ocean to Harry Styles and Blood Orange to Solange Knowles, music's greatest talents often turn to you. Looking back over your collaborations, what are you most proud of?
As a collaborator, I reflect fondly on being in the studio with such amazing people and watching and learning from their process. The best is when we all feel so comfortable that the raw emotions come out effortlessly through the music. It's free therapy!!
Dead or alive, who would you love to work with?
Dead or Alive I guess would like to be around in the prehistoric days, when the first musical notes were played by our primitive ancestors. I wonder if it'd be a monumental occasion like in the beginning of 2001: Space Odyssey, or just some background jazz.
What track do you have on repeat?
João Donato’s Xangô É De Baê.
What track is your track of the summer?
Jennifer Laura’s I am in Love.
What track are you most excited to play next?
I have some new music written. I can’t wait to play it!
Now, what can you tell us about the Store Mix? Could you describe it in your own words?
I try to make mixes that are a bit of a journey... Maybe it starts in a swamp of some kind, then rides a winding river to the beach, then sails across the ocean into the horizon then into the sky.
Beyond shopping at LN-CC, what would you like listeners to be doing when they press play?
I hope listeners enjoy time with loved ones, or positive introspection alone.
