Continuing the shapeshifting success of their ongoing collaboration, Maison Margiela and Reebok combine archives once more in the release of the Project 0 Classic Leather Tabi in white and black. Drawing on codes evolved by creative director John Galliano, the sneaker expresses the characteristics of the French fashion house through one of the Bolton-born, Boston-based sportswear brand’s most recognisable designs. The latest style of the collaboration – which debuted in January 2020 with high-heeled, split-toe reimaginations of the Instapump Fury – represents the most distilled take on the codes of Maison Margiela and Reebok to date. Unifying innovation with heritage, the new with the familiar, and the everyday with the otherworldly, the Classic Leather Tabi splices two 80s-born icons into one.
From the opening walk of its radical debut show in 1989, Maison Margiela’s interpretation of the split-toed Japanese tabi sock, the Tabi boot has been fashion’s most recognisable footprints. Its reclusive founder has even described the Tabi boot as “the most important footprint of my career.” With its recognisable split-toe construction, it represents the deconstructive design philosophy key to the house. Before the Tabi ignited imaginations and split toes, the Reebok Classic leather was born out of the 80s fitness revolution and announced itself with the tagline ‘You’ve Arrived’. Now, it takes confidence to launch a style with ‘classic’ in its name and over the last 38 year this formidable running shoe has become a staple in the casual wardrobe and remains one of Reebok’s most respected and recognisable shoes. It’s time for your favourite sneakers to leave a different mark.
First released in Margiela’s signature hand-painted “Bianchetto” aesthetic, and now, tonal white and black iterations, crafted from nappa leather and featuring an EVA sole. For the Project 0 collaboration, the Classic Leather has been entirely rebuilt to accommodate the Tabi split-toe. If you’re wondering what socks you wear with it, the answer is a tabi toe sock, which is offered to complement both shoes.
