This book provides an extensive visual overview of embroidered souvenir jackets from Japan. Known as sukajans – the jackets originated in the city of Yokosuka, the site of a U.S. naval base that reached the peak of its activities in the wake of the second world war. The iconic design of the jackets is thought to have been borrowed from the style of the classic American letterman – making them perfectly appealing to visiting U.S. navy personnel, who would commission the embroidery of the jackets with traditional Japanese motifs.
